The cellular category is only one part of router selection. A reliable deployment starts with the system around the router: connected equipment, available mobile networks, security policy, installation environment and the way the fleet will be maintained.

Define the operational requirement first

List the services that depend on the connection and decide what happens when an individual network, SIM or router module becomes unavailable. This determines whether a single modem is sufficient or whether the application needs multi-SIM or multi-module resilience.

  • Required uptime and acceptable recovery time
  • Primary cellular connection or backup to a fixed line
  • Number of mobile operators available at the site
  • Expected data volume, latency and peak throughput

Match the cellular technology to the workload

LTE Cat 4 remains appropriate for many telemetry, payment, surveillance and remote-access applications. LTE Cat 6 can provide higher throughput and carrier aggregation where the network supports it. 5G RedCap targets industrial and IoT use cases that need a longer-term 5G path without the complexity of full enhanced mobile broadband hardware.

Coverage and operator support matter more than the label on the modem. Confirm bands and service availability in every target country before standardising a configuration.

Count interfaces at system level

Include every controller, camera, terminal and maintenance connection. Check Ethernet speed, serial standards, digital I/O, PoE requirements and whether an external switch can be avoided. Leave reasonable capacity for commissioning and future changes.

Plan security and remote management

A field router should support the organisation's VPN and firewall policies and provide enough visibility for remote diagnosis. Consider how credentials, configuration backups, firmware and logs will be managed across the full fleet.

  • Configuration deployment and backup process
  • Firmware approval, rollout and recovery procedure

Verify the physical and commercial lifecycle

Review supply voltage, power consumption, operating temperature, mounting, antenna arrangement and cabinet space. For multi-country deployments, confirm radio and safety compliance, product availability and the expected support period before approving the bill of materials.
