The best cellular technology is the one that meets the application's operational needs across the places where it will be deployed. 5G RedCap is an important option, but LTE remains practical for many industrial systems.

LTE Cat 4: established and widely deployable

LTE Cat 4 provides enough performance for many control, telemetry, payment and moderate video applications. Its main advantage is mature network coverage and broad operator support across Europe and the UK.

It is often the practical choice when predictable coverage, hardware cost and current deployment readiness are more important than a 5G migration path.

LTE Cat 6: higher LTE capacity

LTE Cat 6 adds carrier aggregation and higher theoretical throughput. Actual performance depends on signal conditions, spectrum and operator configuration. It can suit applications with heavier data transfer or multiple connected devices while retaining the reach of LTE networks.

5G RedCap: a focused 5G profile

Reduced Capability, usually called RedCap, is designed for devices that do not need the full bandwidth and antenna complexity of premium 5G equipment. It brings industrial and IoT devices into the 5G ecosystem with a more focused capability set.

RedCap availability is not uniform. Country, operator, subscription and local coverage must be verified before it becomes a mandatory project requirement.

Use deployment evidence, not headline speed

Compare technologies using the actual workload, target networks and expected service life. A lower category with stronger coverage and proven operator support can produce a more reliable system than a faster technology with limited availability.

  • Measure coverage at representative sites
  • Confirm supported bands and operator profiles
  • Test recovery between SIMs or modules
  • Validate VPN throughput, not only raw modem speed
  • Review the planned operating lifetime of the installation

A mixed portfolio can be the right answer

Large deployments do not always need one modem category. LTE can remain the standard for established sites while 5G RedCap is introduced where network availability and lifecycle requirements justify it. A consistent operating system and management platform can reduce the operational impact of that hardware mix.
